Nowadays, you can find a wide variety of dishwasher soaps in stores. For example, you can find it in powder, tablets, capsules, gels form, etc., all of them promising cleanliness and shine. This can easily become confusing for you when it’s time to choose an efficient dishwasher soap. But then, which type is best for your dishwasher? Here are a few tips to help you make an efficient choice!
“All in one” capsules and tablets
«All in one» water-soluble tablets (tabs) contain, in just one dose, the cleaning agent, the rinsing agent and the regenerating salt. Thus, they are a good option because you don’t have to put these products one by one on your own. On the other hand, classic capsules only contain the cleaning agent therefore, you have to add the regenerating salt and the rinsing agent individually. To determine which type is best for your dishwasher, start by verifying your water’s hardness (which is the amount of calcium and magnesium contained in your water) through your local City Hall. If your water is “hard” (= very calcareous) then opt for “all-in-one” tabs since they already contain the regenerating salts that will help eliminate limescale spots on your dishes. If your water is “soft”, then it’s best to choose classic capsules, since the water only contains a small amount of calcium and magnesium, you won’t have as much limescale (if any) to get rid off!
Gel dishwasher soap
Many studies demonstrate that dishwasher soaps in gel are generally less efficient and don’t get rid of all the dirt from the dishes. However, one advantage of this type of soap is waste reduction : indeed, you decide which dose you want to put in your wash, depending on the quantity of dishes and the program selected for your wash.
Powder dishwasher soaps
Dishwasher soap in powder form usually comes in a box that includes a measuring spoon. They are as economical as the dishwasher soaps in gel form : indeed, only a small quantity of powder is necessary for a complete wash cycle. However, be careful not to put too much powder in the dispenser because too much could leave undiluted powder soap spots on your dishes or leave moist powder in the dispenser. Not ideal! Manufacturers usually recommend to only put 30 ml of powder soap in order to have fewer spots as possible.
