Home Appliance Repair Tax Credit

Home Appliance Repair Tax Credit: A Broken Promise From the Federal Government??

In 2021, the Liberal Party of Canada promised to introduce a tax credit of up to $500 to cover the cost of home appliance repairs. Let’s remind the government of its commitment.

Less Durable Home Appliances

Modern appliances rarely last more than 10 years.

Obstacles to Repair

Finding spare parts for discontinued models can be challenging.

Repair Rather Than Replace

Encouraging repairs helps combat over-consumption.

Creating Wealth of a Different Kind

A tax credit makes repairs more affordable while supporting local repair businesses.

“As a technician, it’s frustrating to see a fridge that could last many more years… but the system is rigged to push us into buying a replacement.”

Luigi Bauco, Technician, Owner, Service 2000

An Easy Tax Credit to Introduce

This tax break could mirror many existing government programs

When filing your tax return, you’d deduct 15% of home appliance repair costs completed by a licensed company, up to $500. You’d need to keep your invoices as proof… and that’s it.

This measure would cost the government nothing, thanks to its direct and indirect economic benefits. Local repair companies—and the thousands of technicians they employ—pay their taxes here, in Canada.

If Just 1% of Defective Home Appliances in Canada
Were Repaired Instead of Replaced,
It Would Mean...

fewer appliances sent to recycling plants and landfills

saved in unnecessary expenses

fewer greenhouse gas emissions

in direct economic benefits
Calculations based on Canada’s estimated new home appliance market of $9.21 billion in 2024, an average selling price of $699 per appliance, a 10% defect rate per year, and an average repair cost of $220. Each repair saves about 200 kg of GHG emissions compared to manufacturing a new appliance and processing the old one.
